Where the river meets with the sea, with the fabulous
Coorong to the south west (left) and the Fleurieu Peninsular
encompassing Kangaroo Island to the west (right).
Due to a
low flow of water down the Murray, through the barrages and
out to sea the river mouth faces the danger of closing due
to a build up of sand caused by wave and tidal processes.
The mouth actually closed in 1981 for the first time in
recorded history and severe measures are taken by the
Australian Government to prevent this happening again in the
future.
